The Foundation for Rural Education and Development's ( http://www.fred.org/ ) Technology Grants for Rural Schools program was created to help meet the growing need for innova- tive technology in the classroom. In 2007, the program awarded a total of $50,000 in technology grants to public schools.
The grants are funded by a donation from the Rural Telephone Finance Cooperative ( http://www.rtfc.coop/ ) and are designed to help public schools in rural areas served by OPASTCO members bring modern computers to every classroom, connect schools to the information superhighway, and make sure that effective and engaging software and online resources are an integral part of the school curriculum.
To be eligible for the program, schools must be in an OPASTCO (Organization for the Promotion and Advancement of Small Tele- communication Companies) ( http://www.opastco.org/ ) member's service area.
